Remembering Welwyn in World War I

WELCOME TO THE WORLD WAR I WEBSITE OF

WELWYN & DISTRICT HISTORY SOCIETY

The centenary of the outbreak of war in 1914 initiated much effort by Local History Societies and other community groups to study the effect of this conflict on their towns, village and cities, and created a huge pool of information about this period in history. That effort has been rekindled by the centenary of the Armistice in 1918, commemorated around the country.

This website seeks to add a little about the experience of the village of Welwyn in Hertfordshire to that pool.

The events of 1914 - 1918 undoubtedly had a huge global effect at the time and influenced the world’s political and social conditions for many years to come, arguably to the present day. But the Great War also had profound local effects on communities around the world, not only in terms of the loss to individual families but also in the dramatic social changes which came about in the following years and decades.

This web site does not seek to moralise or glorify, nor to examine the politics of the time. It does not seek to explain military strategy or document great battles.

The sole purpose of this site is to record some details of life in Welwyn during those momentous times. Hopefully the information contained will paint a clearer picture than can be seen by simply looking at the names on a war memorial, by exploring, where possible, the histories of those men and women who left but did not return, as well as that of some of the many who did return.

The information used has largely been sourced from public records, but much has also been supplied by the residents and organisations of Welwyn, descendents of past residents and lost servicemen, and many diverse others. All assistance has been gratefully received. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information, it would be foolish not to accept that errors may have crept in, whether through misunderstanding, misinterpretation, or simple human error. Should you spot any such error, we would appreciate hearing from you so that the information can be corrected. Hopefully due acknowledgement has always been given to contributors but if, again by human error, this has not been done please let us know.

This web site very much represents an ongoing project and hopefully more information and articles will regularly be added over the coming years. If you are able to help with more information of any kind or would like to contribute to the site, please contact us.

If you have any queries about Welwyn’s history or the Society please contact us.
