William James Andrews
William James Andrews was born on the 22nd April 1891, the only child of Arthur William Andrews, a baker and his wife Elizabeth. Arthur and Elizabeth were from Hertford, but Elizabeth had been born in Welwyn. William James was baptised in St. Marys Church, Welwyn on May 17th 1891.
William is listed in 1911 as living with his mother in Hertford, working as a trimmer in a Chamois Leather Skin Mills. His father was away in London on business.
William served with the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment which in 1916 was involved in the Battle of the Somme. He died in hospital of wounds on 8th August 1916.
The ‘Hertfordshire Mercury’ reported that his grandmother received a letter from Sister Ethel Fraser at the hospital advising her of the death.
‘He was so brave and never once murmured or regretted his fate. It was very merciful that he was in hospital where he could have everything that was necessary for his comfort. I hope this little note will comfort you, as I know you will be anxious to hear about the brave boy.’
