Henry Quinton Bullard
The Bullard name was long known in Welwyn at the outbreak of the War. Henry Quinton Bullard was born in Welwyn on the 10th September 1897 and baptised in the Parish Church on the 7th November.
His father, also Henry Quinton, was as his father before him, a Basketmaker
and also the Registrar of Births and Deaths, as well as Clerk to the
Burial Board and Parish Clerk.
Henry Quinton senior had married Swiss born Pauline Susanne Louise Julie Haldy in 1894. She had come to work as a nurse to Henrietta Blake, of Welwyn Hall.
Henry Quinton Senior had been a member of the Herts Volunteers for some 20 years, rising to the rank of sergeant. On the outbreak of war he joined the National Reserve as a corporal.
Amongst other things, Henry Quinton junior had been a chorister at St Mary’s Church. At the outbreak of war he was employed as a Grocer’s Assistant by
J. Robarts of Codicote, but left this to return to take over his father’s duties as Registrar of Births and Deaths and Parish Clerk.
He enlisted in May 1915 and was sent to France at the end of that August.
He was killed in action 24th October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.
A memorial service was held in St. Mary’s Church for both Henry Bullard and Albert Gentle on the 7th December 1916.
