Harry Samuel Coulson
Harry Samuel Coulson was born in 1890, the fourth son of Thomas and Caroline, both originally from Lincolnshire and then living as grocers in Newport Pagnell.
Shortly after his birth, the family moved to a larger shop in Hertford, but unfortunately in 1899 Thomas died. Caroline was forced to reduce her business and soon after moved to Welwyn with her family, where she again went into business as a successful Grocer and Baker. Harry’s elder brother John Hardy had also set up business by the outbreak of was, as a Tailor nearby to his mother's shop.
Harry Samuel was educated at the Royal Masonic School, Bushey, where he had a distinguished record. Immediately the war was declared Harry gave up his job as an Assurance Clerk and enlisted in the London Rifle Brigade - on the 6th August 1914. He was rapidly promoted to Corporal and left for France in November 1914.
Harry was soon a Sergeant, but after a few weeks was killed in the Second Battle of Ypres on 13th May 1915.
Harry had a brother, just two years elder, unusually called
Harold Casswell Coulson, who died in 1915 and is buried in Welwyn Cemetery. His memorial also carries an inscription to his younger brother reading
