William Hipgrave
Whilst this man was known as William Ephgrave in Welwyn, he was actually William Hipgrave of Burnham Green. This confusion probably occurred due to incorrect reporting, but nevertheless he appears as William Ephgrave on the memorial.
The Parish Magazine of December 1918 reports his death in the very
last weeks of the war -
“It is most sad to have to mention the loss of another of our men after the war has ceased,but we regret to record the death of Pte. William Charles Ephgrave, of the 9th Norfolks, who was killed in action in France on October 21st, R.I.P.”
Shortly before his death William Ephgrave was listed in the Absent Voters List as living on Welwyn Hill, although the CWGC list him as William Hipgrave.
William Hipgrave was born in Burnham Green in 1888, son of Henry and Harriet, the second of six children. In 1911 he married Florence Charter, who lived with her family on Welwyn Hill. They had three children, Florence, William and Robert.
One of William’s younger brothers Walter served in the Machine Gun Corps and was repatriated home to hospital on October 2nd 1918, he died of Meningitis on 30th August 1919. Walter is buried in Datchworth Churchyard.
