Edward Ward
Edward Ward was born in Welwyn on 15th September 1881 and baptised at St. Mary's Church, Welwyn on 4th December 1881. He was later to become a chorister there, first as a treble and then as a bass.
His parents were William and Rose Ward and he was one of 14 children, including Harry who was also killed in WWI. The family lived at The Royal Oak in Fore Street which was run by his father. His father also opened a bakery and Edward became a baker journeyman and assisted in the business.
He attended the Welwyn National School and played for Welwyn Football Club (he was on the selection committee) until the war broke out. He was also a member of the Oddfellows (becoming secretary of the Welwyn Lodge) and the local social club.
He married Ellen Warsfold on 24th April 1915 and moved to Melbourne House in Mill Lane, when he worked as a clerk/collector for the Welwyn Gas Company.
After his brother Harry's death in 1917 he joined the 4th Battalion
of the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment and was killed in action on 5th November that year.
He was buried where he fell and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial as well as at St Mary's Church. A memorial service was held on 25th November.
