Ernest George Fitt
Ernest, third son of Joseph and Ann, was born in Hertingfordbury in 1891 and baptised in the Parish Church there on the 2nd August, at the same time as brother Arthur James, a year older but shortly to die as an infant. Joseph was a Gardener and at the time Ernest was born was working in the Panshanger Gardens, having just moved from Warwickshire.
Both Joseph and Ernest worked as Gardeners. Ernest had worked as a carnation Grower to Mr Raphael of Porters Park, Shenley and by 1911 was a Gardener on the Danesbury estate. His father at this time was a Gardener to the
Misses Wilshere at the Frythe and living on the estate.
Ernest was a well respected member of Welwyn Football Team for several years.
He enlisted almost at the outbreak of war on 5th September 1914. The
7th Battalion arrived in France in July 1915.
Ernest was killed in action on the 30th September.
Second Lieutenant J HR Rawes, Platoon Commander wrote to Ernest’s father
‘I am writing to you to express my deep sympathy for you in the great sorrow you must feel at the loss of your son. He was a promising fellow and would have done well. He was mush liked by his officers and comrades. I hope his two brothers will have better luck’
Ernest’s younger brother, Francis served in the 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment and survived the war.
