James Parker Hayhoe
James Parker Hayhoe is of one of the overseas men, who appears on the Memorial.
He was born in 1878 in Stanton, Suffolk to James Hayhoe, a schoolmaster and his wife Matilda. His early career was spent as a Grocer’s Assistant in Suffolk, but by 1911 he was residing in Welwyn, again working as a Grocer’s Assistant and lodging with Annie Williams in Mill Lane.
In October 1912 he emigrated to New Zealand, where worked as a Dairyman, accompanied by his younger brother Alexander. They left on the 11th October on board the Orient Lines ship SS Osterley, bound initially for Australia. Alexander however seems to have returned to England as he is given as James’ next of kin on enlistment in 1916 with an address back in Suffolk.
James Parker joined the Auckland Infantry Regiment and on the 8th January 1916 in Wellington embarked aboard the SS Maunganui as part of the 9th Reinforcements Auckland Infantry Battalion, A Company. They were bound for Europe by way of Suez where they arrived a month later.
James Parker Hayhoe was killed in action on 30th March 1918 during the Battle of Arras, on the Somme.
