Albert John Monk 1896 - 1917
Albert John Monk
This man was born in Wheathampstead in 1896 and baptised in the Parish Church there on the 23rd February 1896. He was the second son of labourer Frederick and Charlotte of Gustard Wood.
By 1901 the family was in Welwyn, living in half of the Old Rectory in Mill Lane and Albert was at school. In 1911 he was working as a carman for a coal merchant, J B Davis.
Albert died on the 5th October 1917 from wounds sustained during the Third Battle of Ypres.
His brothers Henry, Marcus and Frederick also served and survived the war.
