Charles Pennell
Charles Pennell was one of the professional soldiers commemorated on the Welwyn War Memorial. Born 12th December 1888 and baptised in St Mary’s Church on the 5th January 1890, he was the son of Charles, a game-keeper and Catherine who then lived at Woolmer Green, although Census returns give Charles junior’s birth place as Codicote. The family moved around the area and by 1901 were living on Welwyn Hill, by which time father Charles was a Postman.
Charles junior enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment at Mill Hill in August 1907, by which time his parents were living in Codicote Road, Welwyn. He had soon attained the rank of Lance-Corporal and in August 1913 extended his service to 12 years. During his time with the Middlesex Regiment he served in various places, including on the Alderney Garrison and India, where he is listed in the 1911 Census.
At the outbreak of war he was engaged drilling new recruits in Kitchener’s Army and promoted to Sergeant in September 1914, but in June 1915 was sent to France. He fought at the Battles of Mons, Festubert and Arras.
He was posted as missing on the 1st July 1916 during an action on the Somme.
