A E Saunders
As may be imagined a large number of possible names exist on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database, which could match the A E Saunders named on the War Memorial.
An Alfred Saunders is certainly linked with Welwyn. In 1898 an Alfred Saunders of the parish of Bedford married Welwyn born Lizzie Philpott.
They are recorded living in Hitchin since shortly after their marriage and by 1911 had 3 sons and a daughter.
It would seem probable that this is the A E Saunders named on the village memorial, but further details regarding his military career are not yet clear.
