Charles Comyn Scott-Gatty
Charles Scott-Gatty was the son of Sir Alfred Scott-Gatty KCVO, Garter Principal King of Arms, and Lady Elizabeth Scott-Gatty. They were a prominent Welwyn family who lived in Wendover Lodge, Church Street, now demolished. Sir Alfred was also a popular composer and interestingly composed many of the pieces played at Memorial Services held in St. Mary’s Church for men killed in the war.
Charles was edcuated at Rugby and in his early career was apprenticed to Vickers, Son and Maxim - in 1901 he is listed as boarding in Barrow-on-Furness as a ‘Steel Ship Builder’ but by 1904 Charles Scott-Gatty married Cicely Muriel Gathorne Hardy and was working as a stockbroker.
At the outbreak of war Charles was living in Codicote and joined the Hertfordshire Regiment, taking command of the the Welwyn Company. For many months after the outbreak of war he was instrumental in organising, training and recruiting for his regiment, eventually causing his health to suffer severely. After recovering from this set back he returned to Hertford and acted as Adjutant to the 3rd Battalion, working with it in Windsor. However this work once again badly affected his health and he was discharged.
He died in London as a result of his service on the 24th July 1916 and his funeral was held in Welwyn on the 27th. He is buried in Welwyn Cemetery.
