Parker, Joseph William
Parker, Cecil George - These two men were the sons of Joseph and Emma Parker of Church Street. Joseph was born in 1895 and served in the 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. Cecil was born in 1898 and served in the 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.
Pateman, Arthur John - Arthur Pateman was born in Welwyn in 1887, son of blacksmith Charles and his wife Elizabeth. They lived in Sewerage Yard, later more elegantly named Orchard Road. Arthur served in D Company of the 3rd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.
Pateman, Charles
Pateman, Ephraim - Charles Pateman and his father Ephraim, both of Mimram Road served in the Forage Corps of the Army Service Corps, which was responsible for supplying the Army’s demand for horse feed. They joined together at Luton in November 1915. Charles was discharged as no longer required in April 1917 and his father, who rose to the rank of Sergeant left in January 1918.
Pearce, David - David Pearce was born in Winchester in 1875 but by 1911 was living in a cottage on Hobb’s Hill with his wife of 12 years, Frances. He worked as a tailor for Poulton’s tailoring concern until joining the Royal Flying Corps in 1916, one of the few Welwyn men to join this young service. He was discharged in December 1918.
Penn, Charles William - Born 1880 in Hatfield, Charles Penn was a gardener of Becket Cottages, where he lived with wife Ann and 2 daughters. He served in the Army Service Corps.
Penn, Herbert Malcolm - Herbert Penn was Clerk to Sir Alfred Scott-Gatty of Wendover Lodge, Principal Kings Garter at Arms. He was born in Lambeth in 1890 and in 1913 married Annie Elizabeth Scott, a servant from Wendover Lodge in Kennington. They lived in the Codicote Road and he served in the 1st Battalion Suffolks.
Peters, George Henry - George Peters was a butcher born in Hitchin who married Elsie Dawes of Welwyn in 1915. They lived in Station Road and very shortly after their marriage he enlisted. He served in a number of battalions of the Royal Fusiliers including the Sportman’s Battalion before being transferred to the East Surreys at the beginning of 1917 and serving in France. He was injured in February 1917 and discharged as no longer fit for military service in August 1917. After his discharge he became Treasurer of the organisation Comrades of the Great War, set up to represent the rights of ex-service men and women who had served or had been discharged from service during World War I. Comrades of The Great War was one of the original four ex-service associations that amalgamated in 1921 to form The British Legion. George Peters’ brothers-in-law Alfred and Frederick Dawes served and both survived.
Pickering, David William - David Pickering was born in Bethnal Green in 1889 and worked as a carpenter. He married Welwyn born Eliza Parker in 1911 and they lived in Mill lane. He joined the Royal Naval Air Service in 1916 and was transferred to the RAF in April 1918 as an Air Mechanic. He was transferred to the Reserve in February 1919 and finally discharged in April 1920.
Pinner, Frank - Frank Pinner was born in Woolmer Green in 1890 but his family moved to Welwyn and lived in White Hill and then Mill Lane. He served initially in the Army before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in March 1918. He was finally discharged from the Reserve in April 1920.
Pressley, George - George Pressley was a chauffeur from Prospect Place. He served as a driver in the Army Service Corps.
Proctor, Percy Arthur - Gardener Percy Proctor and his wife Ada lived in Hatfield before moving to the Codicote Road in Welwyn. Percy served in a Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery.
