William George Titmus
The name Titmus had been well known in Welwyn since Francis Adams Titmus married local girl Sarah Balls in 1870. Francis Titmus was the night mail van driver from Ware to Welwyn, which bought him to the village.
Between them they had 20 children, of whom William George was the 14th. Not untypically for the time of the 20 children 5 died in infancy.
Francis rose to prominence in the village, carrying out various businesses such as fishmonger, greengrocer, second hand furniture dealer and haulage contractor. His obituary in 1922 read -
"We much regret to announce the death of a very old inhabitant of the parish, in the person of Mr Francis Titmus, of Mill Lane, who had resided in Welwyn for fifty five years, and who died on Friday at the age of 73 years. He used to drive the night mail van from Ware to Hatfield and Welwyn over fifty years ago, having taken over this duty from the late Mr Morrell. He was well-known and much respected for miles around. He had not been in good health for some years. The deceased carried on the business of a removal contractor for a good number of years past."
William George worked as a journeyman butcher and enlisted at Hitchin, initially into the Hertfordshire Regiment, but was later transferred to the Linconshire Regiment, where he served in the 8th Battalion.
He died of wounds on 21st August 1917
