John William Warwick
John William Warwick was born in Welwyn on the 26th July 1891 and baptised in St. Mary’s Church on the 6th September. Father William was a shoe-maker and lived with his wife Sarah and the family in Mill Lane. John William was their fourth son.
In 1911 John William was living in Fleet Street in the household of Edward Henry Hoare, where he worked as a footman.
He enlisted at Hertford into the 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. This was a ‘Service’ Regiment, raised for the duration of the war. They served on the Western Front until 1918, when the battalion was disbanded.
In April 1917 the Battalion was engaged in the Battle of Arras and on the 29th April in the Battle of Arleux. John William Warwick died in the heavy loses sustained in the assault on Greenland Hill.
His loss was reported in the Hertfordshire Mercury on the 12th May 1917-
“Pte. John Warwick, Beds. Regiment, brother of Harry Warwick of the Railway Tavern, killed by a German shell on the Arras Front”
